Question: Dear Dr Dee: I am having a hard time deciding on what size to choose. My friends keep saying to ‘make sure its worth it’ and that I should ‘go big or forget it’ My husband is no help at all. He says he loves me just the way I am, and that I shouldn’t do it at all. I have been reading your articles, but I am scared about what to do. Can you help?

Answer: Dear WA: Choosing the right implant for your anatomy is not very difficult. The main problem that I see over and over again has more to do with the psychology of breast augmentation than the actual physiology. Your natural anatomy is the most important factor in choosing a breast implant size- in other words; your desires are unfortunately not as important as your actual shape and size.
Opti-Sizing is a technique used to gather important measurements of your body in order to determine which kind of implant is likely to result in safe, effective, long lasting results.
If it is so safe and effective, what’s the problem? Too many women decide to ignore the advice of their surgeon and choose implants outside the optimal range. Listening instead to their well intentioned, but uninformed friends is part of the problem. When you go shopping for anything else (clothing, shoes, whatever) no one usually tells you what size to get- they naturally assume that you will get the size the fits your body. Women get the notion that breast implants are somehow different, and that they can choose anything they want, regardless of their natural chest size.
